What is a Content Management System?
A Content Management system (CMS) allows authors to create and publish content on the internet without any knowledge of programming languages or HTML.
Prior to the advent of Content Management Systems, updating a website or portal was typically the role of either an internal or external company Webmaster. The webmaster’s job was to convert text and pictures into HTML.
The webmasters position became quite powerful. Webmasters could moderate what went on the web, how the content looked, and decide what was important enough to be placed on the homepage. Often the published content did not end up as the original author had intended. If a webmaster was busy, content would not be published until they were available, so they were also a bottleneck in the system.
This has now changed as Content Management Systems have come of age. Content Management provides the authors themselves with the ability to add content directly, without the need for learning any special technologies or coding skills.
Most content management systems are web-based, which means that the system allows an author to create and publish content accessed via the web, negating the need for any other special web page creation software.
Many Content Management systems feature an approval process or workflow which allows an editor to review content from any number of authors before it goes live on the web.
Other common features of content management systems include Rich Text Editors (which allow authors to format text styles) and image uploading and manipulation facilities.
